BTEC level 3 acting evaluation of devised piece

 Evaluation of devised piece
"Money don't matter tonight"

My groups performance was based on the song “Money don’t matter tonight” by Prince produced in 1992.
My group and I analysed the song lyric and brainstormed what sort of themes and concepts the song lyric was portraying to us, we came up with the ideas surrounding poverty, unemployment, gambling, child war, government corruption and homelessness. We all came to the conclusion that basing our performance on unemployment and homelessness was the best idea as it is realistic and an audience can relate to it, as the levels of unemployment and homelessness are very high in Brighton. We wanted to portray a message to the audience and make them think differently about the people you see on the streets in Brighton everyday.

When my group and I first began devising, our Stimulus was the Song lyric, which then expanded into using research, images of poverty and factual figures for our extended stimuli. My group and I also used seeing homelessness in Brighton on a daily basis as our stimulus. These stimuli inspired my group and I to create a performance that will have an effect on the audience and make them think about today’s poverty situation.
I feel the whole concept of our performance worked as it is strongly realistic and everyone who lives in Brighton can relate to the situation.
The acting techniques my group and I used worked very well as we had a mixture of mime, physical theatre, cross cutting, monologues, puppetry and tableaux. We decided to use these techniques as it enhances the concept of our performance, for example Lucy’s government character portraying the puppeteer using mime created a theatrical effect as it is interesting to watch from the audience’s perspective and conveyed how the characters were being controlled by the government without using narrative.
The stylisation of our characters worked really well as it was clear for the audience what social status each character portrayed. We each had our own individual body movements and our body language was very distinguished from one another. In order to expand our characters my group and I used improvisation, inspired by Keith Johnstone, who specialises in naturalistic improvisational theatre.
I feel that our characters emotions were very clear throughout which worked really well as the audience were able to tell how the characters were feeling in the performance, our desperation was extremely clear throughout, and our projection worked extremely well throughout the performance as this presses the urgency and creates a more powerful feel to the performance.
When watching the video of our performance back I felt our stage positions in the Office scene worked really well and it balanced out the characters, you could almost see the social hierarchy within the office from the way we were positioned. I feel ending with a freeze frame worked well as it ends on a powerful note and portrays the riots and the distress the characters were feeling, it leaves the audience with a powerful thought in their minds.

As group we all discussed our individual ideas for the performance and tried every single idea to see if it would work, we never dismissed an idea, we always interpreted it in one way or another. My group and I were very respectful towards each other and helped each other with criticism and praise about our individual performances. We worked in complicity with each other and I feel this was portrayed in our piece, we all improvised together and kept running through the performance to make it more cleaner and sharper and to test out any ideas we had.
Collectively and individually we researchedabout homelessness and unemployment and also researched naturalistic theatre to help each other improve our acting skills as a group. We always made the most of rehearsing together and always listened to one another’s thoughts and ideas. We worked very independently during rehearsals and did not require guidance from anyone else other than ourselves, we cooperated very well with each other and I believe this shows through our performance. As a group we respected our tutor’s feedback and discussed it as a group, but we never felt that we needed help or structuring from our tutors as we had created such a strong piece ourselves.

Overall I feel our performance worked really well, but naturally there were some little things, which didn’t work so well. I think the main points in our performance that did not work quite as well were the movements and body language in some scenes. For example in the “Rain scene’ I feel the physical theatre could have been more clean, for example when our characters bumped into each other it should have been more apparent and my character’s body language could have been stronger and more shocked when seeing Unis’ character so suddenly.
Another thing that stood out to me when watching it back was Unis’ character holding his jacket in the ‘Rain scene’. For me I felt this was a little distracting and maybe he should not have taken his jacket off, I felt it just looked a little out of place and took my attention off his character for a moment.
Mainly what did not work in our performance was just the way we moved on stage in some scenes and the stage positions, in the ending scene I feel we should have been more centre stage which contrasts with the Office scene as our positions were very strong and central.

To improve on this my group and I should have rehearsed our movement more during rehearsals and also our stage positions, we should have made sure at all times we were centre and came up with a way of staying centre stage at all times. I also feel our movements could have been a lot stronger which could have been improved by stylising our characters movement more and spending more time focusing on this together. Overall our main weaknesses were our movements, I feel everyone’s acting techniques were very strong, it was just the positioning and movements that should have been improved.
Ultimately to improve our performance my group and I could have rehearsed movements more, particularly during the Rain scene and the ending ‘Riot’ scene. I feel our body language and expression could have been a lot stronger on the ending freeze frame, which would have created a more powerful effect on the audience.
Personally with my character, to improve the performance I feel I could have been more shocked and surprised when I bumped into Unis in the ‘Rain’ scene, as when watching it back I didn’t quite look as surprised as I thought I did, so I would definitely change my body language and tone of voice in that scene.
Our physical theatre use was very good, but I still feel we could have improved it. Lucy’s puppeteer movements could have been more exaggerated and powerful, and my body language could have been stronger when Unisand I are planning a riot at the end of the performance. The way we moved around the stage on the words ‘ Petition, Protest and Riot’ could have been sharper and stronger to emphasise the desperation and power the words were portraying to the audience.

To conclude I feel my group’s performance was a very well devised piece with some strong links to Brighton’s economic situation and clear characterisation of naturalistic characters, I thoroughly enjoyed working with my group and feel we were extremely mature and in complicity with each other. We had some weaknesses in our movements and stage positions but overall I am extremely happy with how our devised piece was performed and feel we delivered our message to the audience with great impact.

Research and Images

http://www.brighton-hove.gov.uk/content/housing/general-housing/homelessness

'Homelessness remains a significant problem in Brighton & Hove. High property prices and and low average income have resulted in high levels of homelessness, and demand for affordable homes in the city far exceeds supply'

There are multiple websites which offer help to young 'rough sleepers' in Brighton and Hove including:

These websites target young homeless people living in Brighton and Hove and combat to help them and find them places to sleep and also donations towards refuge houses and more facilities.
The NHS CHOICES website state that Homeless people have a life expectancy of just 47. Weather conditions, hygiene, starvation and exposure to harm contribute to this claim.
'The new research found that the average homeless person has a life expectancy of 47, compared to 77 for the rest of the population: a startling difference of 30 years. The life expectancy for women was even lower, at just 43 years. Crisis has called on the government to address this by improving and prioritising health services for homeless people in NHS reforms'

This website tells a story of a man aged 35 who died frozen on a doorstep of an abandoned bungalow trying to keep warm through a harsh winter.

8th October- 1 day before performance!

Reflect what it means to be professional during a technical rehearsal?
During the sound and lighting rehearsal today my group and I were very patient and efficient. We respect the lighting and sound technicians and how much information they need to know for everyones individual performances so we treated them with the upmost respect. We were very polite and made ourselves clear and easy to understand.
Todays rehearsal went really well and I have also gained knowledge of the different lights and what they do and how lighting can enhance a performance on a stage as it sets the mood and makes the characters stand out even more so than they do already.
It is very important to be professional during technical rehearsals as they are solely for the technicians and not for actors, as they need to know the cues for the lighting and sound and when they scenes begin and end. We already know this so it is crucial that we are very co operative so that the sound and lighting effects we have chosen will run smoothly and in time with our cues.
It is also important for actors to be professional during technical rehearsal as it reflects well on the actors ability to work with other people besides other actors! It also shows maturity and good nature to be professional during rehearsal as we are providing someone else with information about our performance and are being patient and polite and working with their abilities.
Being professional is a key point to acting as you are representing yourself and showing people what you are made of, and if you don't act in a professional manner then that could affect your career as an actor as you won't be seen as a professional in the industry.

7th October- 2 days before performance

What did we do today?
In todays lesson my group and I were rehearsing our performance and running our lines together.
We made great progress today, and have cleaned up all areas in our performance that needed to be, and it is much more structured and flows more naturally, especially the ending scene.
Mine and Yunasa's end scene has improved vastly and we are both happy with it, we decided to change the ending dialogue as it we feel it makes the scene more realistic and flows better. Instead of me saying "meet us back here in an hour" Yunasa's character adds some action into the scene and mimes throwing a bottle into a building window, this adds action and imagination to the end scene and ends with a "bang". We are going to use sound effects after Yunasa throws the bottle to add affect and excitement, we are going to use sirens and as soon as we here  the sirens we begin chanting 'WE NEED TO MAKE A CHANGE' and fade into our freeze-frame with Greta, and Lucy ends the piece with her ending monologue.
I am really happy with our performance, I feel we all have strong characters and have worked really well together and individually on developing our characters and dialogue.

Today we also finalised our sound effects and wrote them down in order, we are not using too many sound effects but the ones we are using are very effective and set the mood for our scenes. We have all worked as a team and shared our ideas on how we could make the performance better and we are all pleased with it. I don't feel that we have anymore to alter or clean up now, we just need to keep rehearsing it until the show!

27/09

Greta playing the manager, myself playing the receptionist  and Lucy playing the newsreporter

This picture is of the 3 people in my performance that are not sympathetic to homelessness and Unis' characters situation. We are all playing characters that abide by the laws of the government. However we all came to the outcome that my character has a change of heart and feels empathy for Unis' character and we unite. We feel this portrays human nature as we did not want to make all our characters motionless, we want a bit of compassion for Unis' situation too.

How did we come to those outcomes?
We came to the outcomes of our performance by working together as a team, sharing and interpreting each-others ideas and researching about poverty and unemployment in the early 90's. We found that unemployment was very high, particularly in America, but we have decided to set it in England as it is more realistic and we don't want to base everything on fact we want it to be naturalistic as well as we do not have American accents. A lot of our performance has been influenced by social status and how it mattered vastly in the early 90's, we want to convey how stereotypical people in the work place were back in the early 90's towards homeless and unemployed people. We have also included the great pressure people who did have jobs were under from their managers and how warped the government perspective was on poverty, and how rich people mattered more and were the more powerful class.
Another outcome we came up with was to include protesting and rioting as our research showed a lot of riots happening in the early 90's and how people wanted freedom of speech and equality. We all feel this is important to include in our performance as we want to show how the poor and unemployed spoke up and made a change.
Our main phrase that we repeat in our play is " WE NEED TO MAKE A CHANGE"
We feel repeating this phrase portrays the urgency and seriousness of our performance.

How are we using the song lyric and research?
The song lyric we used as a stimulus gave us the basic idea of our performance which is about poverty, unemployment, social status and freedom of speech.
The song lyric spoke about war, poverty, gambling, money and government. The song lyric gave us a lot of ideas, some of which we did not use as we tried them out and they did not quite flow or come together. But we built on what we had as a team and accomplished a very focused and productive performance.
The research we all did has played a massive part in our performance as we wanted it to be realistic and based on true facts rather than what we think it would have been like in the early 90's. Our research has taught us how corrupt the government was towards unemployment and homelessness in contrast of how it is today.

4/10

What was my groups feedback?
The feedback my group were given after our performance was good and helpful.
The feedback that involved me was the ending scene with my character ' Scarlett' and Yunasa's character ' Raymond'. The feedback was to alter the dialogue at the end of our scene, instead of saying 'meet me back here in an hour' after speaking about starting a riot/protest, I personally did not like this line as I felt it didn't quite flow so I am glad that other people felt the same way. We have decided to alter the dialogue and leave a bit open for the audience to wonder what we are going to do next instead of having it planned out by saying 'meet me back here in an hour' me and Yunasa feel this makes the scene more natural and realistic and helps the scene end on an interesting note.
Other feedback we received was about Lucy's character of playing the puppet of the government who watches over everyone and never try's to help them. The audience felt Lucy should make her character more defined and clear, as some people did not quite know what she was supposed to be doing. I think having Lucy play the government's puppet is a great idea to have in theatre and it lets the audiences imagination take over, she just needs to make it a bit more clear and understandable.
The feedback we received was mainly just little tweaks to make it more solid, and I am really happy with my groups performance.

What I want to work on, on Monday...
On monday I want to work on the end of mine and Yunasa's scene to make it more natural and add a bit of action and slow motion, I was thinking of having Yunasa's character throwing a brick or a glass bottle onto somebodies car or into a shop window to kickstart the 'rioting' and stay in the freeze-frame, and my character using slow motion techniques for the protest and riot with my fists up high in the air and ending in a freeze-frame also. This will add theatrical suspense and will be interesting for the audience. My group and I have decided on what sound and lighting effects we want in our scenes, which I want us to write down in scene order so we have that completed. I feel we all just need to run through a few more times and tie up any loose ends, as i feel our performance on the whole is pretty much completed! All our characters are very personalised and we all have our own way of walking, body language, talking and individual characteristics. I also feel Yunasa's character could project his voice more and have a more angry attitude in some of the scenes, as he is suffering and unemployed. He shouldn't be so calm about his situation all the time as we are trying to convey just how serious poverty and homelessness is to the audience.

1/10

1. What was the group discussion with Siou?
The discussion we had with Siou was about acting techniques we have been taught and are using in our performances, examples of these techniques are

  • Freeze-frame
  • Slow motion
  • Relationship with audience
  • Building a character
  • Tableaux
  • Vocal techniques
We also discussed what we can improve on as a group which has helped as the class generally said similar improvements to work on, so we all know we are feeling the same things as eachother.

2. How does this affect your group work on your scenes?
My group and I use a lot of the techniques we have learned in class which gives our scenes more strengths and a variation of acting which is interesting to watch as an audience and more interesting to perform. In our scenes we use;
  • Mime
  • Freeze-frame
  • Tableaux
  • Cross cutting
  • Monologues
  • Voice projection
  • Movement in Canon
3. What have we improved on today?
Today my group and I have improved a lot on the ending scene to our performance, which is Me and Unis meeting in the street at night time. We have changed the dialogue slightly so it flows better and have added some movement so the scene seems more realistic and natural. We have created a freeze frame at the end with Myself, Unis and Greta portraying the protests and riots.
We also have discussed our costumes and what lighting/sound effects we will be using.
Our performance is on the whole finished, we just need to make sure we all know all our lines and it all flows naturally, as our performance is very polictial we want to reflect this in a very realistic way to the audience.

30/09

2 major outcomes from today's rehearsal ...
My group and I have finalised our performance which is a great outcome, we have all the scenes and the structure is looking really well developed. It has improved vastly since our last lesson on Friday and is looking much more complete.
Another major outcome from today's rehearsal is the decision we have made to set our performance in the present day rather than having it set back in 1991 when the song was made. We feel it's easier and more realistic if its set in the present day as we can relate to the situation more. For example- we all see homeless people everyday in and around Brighton so we know what it looks like and how serious it is, rather than basing it in the past.

How did we come to those outcomes?
We came to these outcomes as a group by running through our performance 5-6 times, improvising and seeing what world and what didn't. We have made a lot of progress and our performance is a lot stronger now.
Also we came to our outcomes by deciding what would make more of an impact on the audience and playing around with our lines a bit more. The outcome to set it in this present day rather than the past came from my group discussing how this will make more of an impact as the number of unemployment and homelessness is so high at this present day, so our performance will reflect what is happening right now and will portray urgency.

How are we using the song lyric and research?
We are using research but rather than research about the past when the song was produced, we are researching about the present day and how the economic situation regarding poverty and homelessness is very high. But we are still using the song lyric as it was our stimulus and has given us all the ideas for our performance.

'Just be'

Describe the exercise "Just Be"
Just be is a very simple yet challenging exercise.
We all had to stand on our own and be focused on a spot in the room, be drawn to that spot and just be in that spot, relaxed and calm. It sounds very easy but when doing it it is not as easy as I thought in my mind!
You have to allow your body and mind to just relax in front of everyone in the class and not let your brain take over and make you feel awkward and uncomfortable just standing doing nothing. It is quite an un natural stance as it is not something you would do on your own.
My reaction to this exercise before doing it was quite indifferent as it sounded very easy and simple, during the task I tried to remain as calm and relaxed as possible, and I felt once I got into my bodys rhythm of being still and calm I felt at ease and did not feel awkward, even though in the back of my mind I could hear my thoughts saying 'this is very awkward and strange'
It is a very good acting exercise as it helps you to become comfortable and relaxed in your own body and feel you can stand in front of a number of people not really doing anything and still feel confident about yourself.
It also helps you to work well under pressure, with everyones eyes on you at all times it could feel slightly embarrassing but this exercise allows you to not feel embarrassed it just lets you be as you are no matter what you are doing. It helped my ability to focus on being relaxed, which to me is important when it comes to acting because if I am not relaxed and in tune with who I am, it would affect my acting abilities.
How can you apply any of todays exercises to your scenes?
I can apply todays exercises to my scenes as they have taught me how to be more comfortable and in tune with myself being relaxed in front of other people in such an uncomfortable situation. In my scenes I can now feel even more comfortable with my group and the rest of the class as an audience.
The exercise we did today when we had to fixate ourselves to different spots in the room and be drawn to them will help me in my scenes as it required determination from within to reach that spot even though it was only me telling myself to get to those spots. I also feel a lot more playful after the exercises we did today which will also enhance my acting abilities in my scenes. All the exercises today can be applied in my scenes as they were all to do with trust, honesty and being comfortable with yourself.

Performing to the classroom 23/09

What worked and why?
I feel what worked in my group's performance was our determination to show to the audience what message we are trying to convey. In our scenes we are really focused on portraying how hard it was for homeless people to get a job and how the support for those people was not as great as it is now.
I feel we work really well together as a team and our characters are coming together really well. I also feel our body language works really well in our scenes, for example- when Unis comes into the Job Centre looking for work his body is very open towards my character and he seems nervous and in contrast my characters body language is very closed and not interested, this contrast I feel works really well.

What do you want to work on more?
I want to work more on the structure of our performance and stage positioning. At the moment we have the ideas and we have the characters dialogue in place but we need to work on how we look on the stage. For example when Unis is talking to myself and Greta he needs to be facing the audience but facing us at the same time, we need to work on Unis not having his back to the audience.
In my monologue I need to move around more as well, as an idea I would like to fall to the floor and change the levels as it adds a more dramatic and desperate feeling to match my monologue.
Another idea I have is for the ending scene which my group and I have planned to have all 4 characters coming together to unite and encourage freedom of speech and protesting. I think it would be a good idea to have slow motion and tableaux  involved in this scene, as it could show us protesting in slow motion and ending in a tableaux  portraying freedom and victory.

Scene of our assignment

In this photo my group and I are rehearsing our first full scene for our assignment.
The scene shows Unis who is playing a poor, homeless young man who desperately needs to find any kind of job, myself playing a belittling, cold and arrogant receptionist who does not care for the young mans welfare at all, and Greta who is playing another receptionist who has a slightly different persona to my character. She is as well no help at all to the young man but she is much more polite than my character is, but she still does not care for his situation.

We developed this idea buy trying to picture just how hard it could be for a homeless young man looking for work back in the early 90's, our research told us that poverty in America in the early 90's was a major problem yet the government and the rich did not do much to help people in need and they were seen as 'the bottom of the food chain'. Therefore my group and I wanted to portray just how nasty and corrupt 'upper class' people were about the seriousness of unemployment and homelessness.

This scene links with our song lyric as the song itself is all about poverty, corruption, money, power and American government.
Our scene projects to the audience the stimulus to 'Money don't matter tonight'
We feel that the song is trying to get a message across to the public just how corrupt society is and America's obsession with money, social status and hierarchy. Our scene definitely portrays social status to the audience, as myself and Greta are very condescending and patronising to the young man and try to maintain the upper hand and look down our noses at him. We believe that this is a precise example of how American society was to people of lower status in the early 90's.

The next thing we want to work on is our monologues. We all have a basic idea of the characteristics of who we will be playing, but we need to develop their personalities and their background information i.e- where they came from, why are their lifestyles the way they are now.

Song lyric

How can we improve what we have done in class?
My group and I can improve what we did in class today by establishing the location of the ensemble we put together. We also can improve what we did in class by projecting our individual characters personality a little bit more so the audience can be drawn into our performance and feel in tune and connected with us.
What more research do we need to do?
Within my group we need to research the protesting that happened in the early 90's and get a feel and an image as to how we should be portraying the protesting in a more realistic and emotional way.
I feel we also need to research into how serious poverty was in the early 90's and how it is today. We need to get an idea of why the numbers of homeless people is so high and try to find out why that is. In order for us to be able to portray poverty in our ensemble in an urgent and precise way.
How can we use what we learned from today's exercises?
In today's lesson we experimented with improvisation, freeze frames and movement. I feel I have learned how to bring emotion to freeze frames and how to be vocal to an audience without using my voice, but with using my facial expressions and body language.
My group and I can use these skills in making our ensemble more clear and express what we are trying to show in our freeze frames and slow motion with our bodies better.

This is a photo of my group and I showing one of our protesting freezeframes.

Song lyric

What are the main feelings you tried to express?
The main feelings my group and I tried to express were control, power and happiness.
The song we have studied for our performance "money don't matter tonight" is about poverty and government control. It expresses the feelings of greed, anger, hopelessness and sadness. In our tableaux we expressed people on the streets in the early 90's which is when the song was produced, protesting and practising freedom of speech and embracing poverty and sadness. My group and I don't just want to show the audience sadness and poverty we want to express the positive side of the song which is about people who don't rely on money and materialistic objects, we were expressing hope and peace.

1 idea for what you would like to do next in the scene?
An idea which I would like to do in the next scene is an insight to the lives of the people in the early 90's living in poverty stricken areas particularly in America as the song is based in America. I would like to recreate the lives of the people and express their social status and their attitude to 'freedom of speech'
My group and I have spoken about involving protesting scenes as the song has given us ideas about people wanting peace and not being interested in the amount of money they own.
I would also like to show other aspects which involve the people who are obsessed with money and feel the amount of money they have impacts on their social status. The song overall portrays the bad habits of American society and how government greed has led to 'war, child war, poverty and death' over the years. And as a group we want to produce this but also show positive aspects such as 'freedom of speech, protesting for peace and happiness on the streets'
Additionally we have all discussed and agreed that the song portrays the introduction to hiphop and rnb on the streets and we would like to have an urban vibe to our ensemble.
